BUILDING & REMODELING  101

by Tim Frentz

Stirling Solar System

I specialize in sustainable tiny home design and enjoy consulting projects of all sizes. This is a helpful guide for home building or remodeling of any size project. It will give you the pros and cons of the choices you have to make along the way so you can make the most informed decision possible.

If you have received a free copy of this guide, please consider making a small donation to our non-profit Helping Hands Network by emailing tfrentz@hotmail.com for payment options.

This guide is also very helpful for those that are relying on a general contractor to treat them fairly and make the best quality decisions possible on their behalf within the agreed contract pricing. I recommend you retain your general contracting rights and contract each stage of the project on your own. It is a difference in paying approximately a 33% mark up on every single process. In the end, it is the difference between paying closer to $66,000 instead of $100,000.

Most of the time, these decisions are made because of increased pressure on the home owners by the lender. In most cases, lenders will have some qualifications that need to be met before approving the loan. This just means that you need to find a construction friend that can sign-off as a general contractor on your behalf. The main qualification hurdle on a whole home build loan is that you contract a professional framer. Beyond that, most of the other processes are more lightly regulated by the lender.

I strongly urge you to save up your cash and only build a little at a time as you have enough funds without financing from a high interest rate lender. By doing this you limit the chains that prevent you from living freely out of debt.

This guide is written in the order of a new construction process from the planning to finishing stages.

Prices change often and vary by region so I do not list them in this guide. You will need to look up current pricing for your area as needed.

RESOURCE PLANNING

The more cash and credit you have available, the easier it will be to achieve your goals. However, do not feel that a project is beyond reach due to a lack of available finances. I have completed some amazing projects with resources acquired through barter, thrift, salvage, auction and even scrap yard hunting.

Once you have completed your first wave of resource planning through all discounted methods, it is time to begin looking for the products and services that you will need to pay more for. Keep watching for deals from the first phase of resources but get your plan B in order.

I will give examples as this guide goes over each section of the process. Price estimates are based on a 2000 sq. ft.; 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath home.

DESIGN DRAFTS

After you have a resource list organized, you are ready to place them in a blueprint of your project. After you have a blueprint, you will know how many items or how much material you need. If this is a complete structure build or remodel, you will need to obtain the property or a trailer to put it on.

INSPECT & OBTAIN PROPERTY

You can now pick a location that may have some of the natural resources you need in your design plans. It is best to obtain free property from family or homestead an unclaimed territory for new building but if you must resort to buying, try to avoid a realtor at all costs and contact private sellers. If you have trade skills, you can use them to build a friendship with the owner of a property you have your eye on. Do enough projects with them and you will likely get a nice discount.

While reviewing land, look closely. Are there any trees in the way of building equipment? Are the trees in the right location for shade? Are there any food baring plants and trees? Are there enough lumber trees to burn for heat on cool nights?

If there is a natural spring or running stream you can have drinking water and the ability to connect a hydro turbine for electricity. If there is a hill, you will be able to form a swell wall to catch rain in a pond and gravity drop your plumbing to avoid city or county utilities. Do you know what the outdoor burning rules are so you can minimize your non recyclable waste?

What is the ground content? Take a shovel and dig 2 feet down if you can because the content of the ground determines your options and how expensive the foundation and power will be.

GROUND BREAKING & FOUNDATION

*Assuming this is not a mobile or trailer project

A solid foundation pad is a must. If you cut corners on setting your foundation, the rest of the house will fail long before you are gone. If you build on top of soft dirt or sand your house will settle and potentially brake windows, doors, walls, tile and much more and you will end up removing and replacing everything you planned so hard to save money on.

Hopefully the property has some form of long lasting material to base the foundation. Ideally you want a hard wood forest on site so you can hue the logs, tar them and build on top of those that have a long shelf life. This land will most likely have enough soft spots that geothermal tubes can be placed 30 feet into the ground to provide heat and cooling.

If the ground is hard, you will only need to pay for a leveling service. Make sure they clear a path or driveway also while doing the pad. Chances are that a soft area for geothermal will not be available and drilling would be too expensive so other renewable energy solutions will need to be considered.

Building into the side of a hill and doing an earth roof will increase your homes climate comfort while minimizing the need for heating and cooling so hopefully your land has plenty of free “earth” to use. Building into a slope on one side of your home will also protect your family from tornado type storms.

Basements are an added expense but if you are in a strong storm area, you will want to consider a small shelter room that can double up as a panic room and valuables safe. But for most purposes, building into the side of a hill will provide safety rooms along that one side.

A standard leveling charge for a service where the removed layer remains on the property is around $2000. Hard rock/ore delivery plus compacting services will cost around $8000. A medium sized poured basement is around $12,000. There is no reason to pay to have your earth hauled off. There will be plenty of landscape uses for it.

*My next home will have an earth wall and roof.  J

FRAMING

I strongly encourage you to consider building naturally. Commercial lumber, drywall and paint is all processed with chemicals that your body absorbs over time. Adobe, straw bale and natural wood along with other repurposed materials should be researched before using any commercial products.

If you must use commercial products, standard pine lumber does fine and unless you are doing mostly glass walls, you do not need any metal framing. On a earth wall, treated lumber with waterproof wrapping and prepped gravel and draining measures will be needed. The most important parts of commercial framing include having treated 2×6 base plates on a solid foundation with proper drainage, 2×8 floor laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beams, high weight baring ceiling trusses and properly supported weight baring walls.

Any external wood wall structure needs to be wrapped in waterproof sheeting. This also improves insulation values. The typical 2000 sq. ft. home will cost about $14,000 to frame with commercial products. Using natural products will reduce this cost tremendously.

Porch easements are included in framing but not deck and sun room additions. See “SURROUNDING” comments for details.

ROOF

There are many options for roofing and it is easy to over think and get overwhelmed in the decision.

An earth covered roof is the longest lasting with proper installation and maintenance. Treated plywood with a layer of ice and water shield covered by rubber rolled roofing is the best way to waterproof the roof.  Put a shovel scoop of gravel down before each section of the sod to keep roots from growing into the rubber and to keep the sod from eroding away in high winds. Framing needs to be done with 2×6 walls to support the extra weight but the benefits are well worth the minor increased lumber cost. The earth roof will filter out dangerous radio waves and radiation but yet allow a decent phone signal through.
Metal roofs require special tools and a lot of expensive screws, custom edge pieces, and ridge and end caps. If the pitch is not steep enough, rain will make a very annoying loud pounding noise. Extra insulation is needed to keep the noise muffled. Metal will disrupt radio waves so if you rely on cell phones you will want to consider a copula bell tower with windows to hold a range extender to improve your reception and data flow.

Asphalt shingles are inexpensive and easy to repair and maintain and do not filter radio waves as much as metal.

Wood shakes and clay tiles are expensive and pricey to maintain and repair.

HEATING / COOLING

The most efficient heating/cooling system to install will cost about the same as a traditional system. The only headache is that the Sterling Engine will take some self training to repair if it ever acts up. A sterling engine uses far less energy than a natural gas furnace and electric air cooling condenser.

Here is an example of a Sterling engine on a geothermal system by Cool Energy of Boulder CO. The only change I recommend is switching to an inline on demand water heater instead of the water tank. Tanks cost the same price and have more maintenance issues and take up too much space.

Stirling Solar System

A Sterling engine works by using the pressure created by temperature change to move the engine pistons as needed. This means that in a geothermal system, there is no need for gas or electric power input to drive the system. It is completely powered by the change of the temperature alone. The higher the range of temperature in your area, the more energy it creates.  The city of Boulder, CO is a leader in renewable energy implementation and design and they use several SolarFlow Systems.

CoolEnergyInc.com/video-solarflow-system/

I recommend having the HVAC unit wired to the grid as well as to the Sterling (SolarHeart) engine just in case one or the other has problems.

PLUMBING

There is not much to plumbing. You need a constant reliable source of fresh water like a well, stream, lake or pond; a digester for waste; and a heating source. A raised water tank or up-hill source provides the needed water pressure for showers while an in-line water heater powered by a single solar panel system with battery backup will provide all the warm water you need.

If the main water source is a pond or river, you will need a pump powered by a water wheel turbine or solar system to move the water uphill to your house unless it is channeled from a higher elevation. If that is the case, your land is in a high danger of being flooded often.

Make sure your water lines are pex tubing and that they are not installed on any external walls if you are in a region that gets below freezing.

You will want to find a good deal on a UV filtering system also. You have no idea what is in bottled or public water sources. Rain water will have the least amount of harmful chemicals but near large industrial plants even the rain water is likely to be contaminated. A UV filter system is the best way to be certain you have minimized the risk of your drinking water.

ELECTRICAL

With the framing, roof and main plumbing lines done, electrical wiring can be setup. There is not much to be decided. The main choices you have to make are where you want outlets, switches, speakers, fans and such located. You will want to obtain a code book from the local utility office to help you. Make sure your fuse breaker box is not outside. It is no fun to go out in the weather to reset a breaker. Anything outdoors is also a target for vandals.

You can buy the wire at a contractor supply wholesaler or through an electrician friend and do some quick research on the codes in your area. When running wire, drill holes in the middle of the wood and tack metal plates over the holes on the interior wall side of the holes to prevent wall nails from penetrating the wiring which could result in shorts and possible fire. You need to use wire staples to hold the wire to the studs at least every 12 inches to prevent it from being punctured by wall nails.

Make sure you use the proper gauge of wire for the items being used on the circuit. You will want to review your wiring diagrams with an expert to make sure you are running them properly and then you just need to pay a licensed electrician to connect everything for the inspection.

You will want to have as many windows as possible to limit the need for electrical light but when you do need them, pick Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights to minimize the energy dependence.

Make sure you wire for renewable energy sources like solar panels, a backup battery bank and a grid tie inverter.

Run as much of the wire as possible underground to limit electric pulses surrounding you and minimize interference. This usually is limited to the main line running from a utility pole to the fuse box. Make sure your fuse box and the connection point of the main utility line is properly placed for the line coming in from the utility pole. It is a common mistake to place a fuse box and hook up in a location not serviceable. This means that thousands of dollars in running wire could be wasted if it has to be pulled and relocated. The expense can grow very large if other finish work like drywall and such would need to be torn out for a rewire.

IF you connect to an Electric Utility grid, make sure you demand a mechanical meter. DO NOT accept a digital SMART METER. These smart meters amplify electric pulses and radiation surrounding you in order to emit strong waves of data 100’s of feet away to allow utility vehicles to drive around and monitor energy use. They also serve as a computer hackers back door into your privacy. The signal can be hacked and skilled thieves can see the energy spikes. This information tells a thief if anyone is home and allows them to case a target easier. (See StopSmartMeters.org)

DOORS AND WINDOWS

As valuable products begin moving into the home, the doors and windows need to be installed. These are very simple and you don’t need to pay a builder to do a task that a couple of friends or family can help you do. Unfortunately it is hard to find a builder who is willing to allow home owners to get in the middle of some projects like doors and windows. Most of the time owners just give in and overpay to have the ease of mind and smooth progress. Two key things to remember include, insulating the gaps and taping over the outside edges to water proof them before stone work, siding, flashing and trim begins.

EXTERNAL FEATURES

After plumbing and electrical holes are all in place through external walls, you can start installing accent features like stone or brick. I recommend at least one third of the outside be done in a durable long lasting resource.

Siding

There are so many external product options that a person can go insane trying to design and decide their ideal finish. The longest lasting, easiest to maintain and most affordable options to compliment the stone includes barn wood, hardwood logs, and steel panels. These do not need paint maintenance.

Hard wood logs need to be from a species that no pests are attracted to in your area. Do your research. Poplar is one I prefer. Cedar is the leading choice for fascia and trim because it is rot resistant.

Vinyl and standard wood siding require a lot of maintenance costs. Vinyl fades and cracks easily. Base wood siding products need excessive nailing, paint and caulk which doubles the cost. The ridge on most horizontal wood siding attracts dirt, mildew and webs.

Concrete (Hardy) board siding is durable and allows custom color finishes but has far too many disadvantages. It chips under pressure and is hard to repair. Labor costs are 3x the cost of other options because it is messy and requires special tools. It also needs trim nailed on seams and needs caulked and painted. It does not miter well for trim. It also makes a dangerous dust that gets in your eyes and lungs when being cut.

Soffit

For soffit, I prefer wide 1/2 inch thick wainscot planks with tongue and groove laps treated in polyurethane. Vents just attract dirt and insects so I just drill small holes for ventilation. My second choice is a vinyl paneling. Do not go with aluminum because the paint fails and the slightest of dings are permanent. Some minor dings can be reversed by placing a heat gun over the dent but it is not guaranteed. Aluminum soffit is also hard to replace.

Wood rots and cement hardy board chips so I do not recommend using them. Dirt and webs also stick to them and are much harder to power wash off.

Fascia

The wood should be treated or rot resistant and it should be covered in aluminum. An 80 ft. by 3ft role of coil costs about $100 and a bending machine can be rented for about $50/day. There is nothing complicated about doing this. After installing the metal, make sure to seal the edges with caulk and your fascia will look like new for a long time with just occasional washing. This will also keep pests out.

Window & Door External Trim

Make sure all the edges are sealed with water proof tape and have metal rain flashing installed. Now, add any wood frames you want and then use the same materials as the fascia over the frames unless you are adding some nice stone or brick highlights. This needs to be done before the stone or siding goes on.

Gutter

Controlling the flow of water near your foundation is critical. Installing gutter at the right angle will take two people but it is a simple “DIY” project. Long seamless runs of gutter are nice but they are not worth the cost of custom ordering and the hassle of installing.

Rain Catchment

Install the down spouts of the gutters to barrels so you can channel the excess water into your gardens and home plumbing system.

INTERIOR

Insulation

The standard r30 rated rolled insulation is great for walls but if you have a metal roof you are going to want to add some blow in insulation on top of it to drown out rain. That also means you can’t have vaulted ceilings. Insulation requires no special skills to install so save some money and get your friends to help with this too.

Walls

Drywall is heavy but with strong help it is not complicated to install. You will want to install it and then pay an expert to come in and sand the joints. You then want to make sure you paint a sealer/primer over the drywall to protects it before being painted. Again, I encourage natural products like wood or adobe instead of chemically polluted drywall.

Tile is best for bathrooms and kitchens.

Ceiling

Drywall, labor, plaster texture and paint is just as expensive as doing ceilings in a nice wood so consider it heavily.

Flooring

Remember to watch for deals. You can get great wood flooring at auctions or clearance areas of hardware stores and flooring liquidator warehouses. Installation is easy but requires a special nail gun that can be rented for about $40 a day.

Carpet does not last and it requires vacuum maintenance and stores bacteria germs and pet hair.

Tile is great but requires a special cutting saw and the grout in the joints requires a lot of time to keep clean on floors.

Trim

Borders, frames, base board, wall accents and ceiling crown molding is an art form. It is a bit challenging to get joints mitered just right and caulked for paint but you should at least try it before giving in to pay an expert.

Stone Fire Guard

A wood burning stove doubles as a room warmer in the cold months. It is one of the most used items in my home. A stone mantle or raised floor fire guard is nice accent piece to any home.

Counters

Again, I’m a strong supporter of natural wood. Marble and granite are nice but expensive and when they get damaged you have to live with it because it is too expensive to replace. I will take a nice hard wood with thick layers of durable clear coat any time.

Cabinets

There are a lot of DIY kits available. Go check some out at IKEA or a similar store where they let you use computer diagrams to layout and print blueprints. I recommend you consider auctions and area salvage stores for discounted handles and hardware before over paying at stores. Antique hardware is better crafted and cleans up nicely.

Closets

There are a lot of easy DIY kits available so don’t pay someone to put them together.

Appliances

Dish washers are a waste of space and water. The average person, washes their dishes and then still puts them in a dishwasher thinking the high heat treatment is needed to eliminate any remaining bacteria. The extra use of energy and water is just silly.

Do you really need a dryer? You can hang your clothes up to dry and save a lot of money on energy bills. It may not be as big of a deal if you are generating an abundance with your solar and wind systems but a dryer is the biggest consumer of energy in a home along with a furnace. The luxury of being able to de-wrinkle or improve odors quickly is a hard habit to break but with proper preparation, you can do this just as well without a dryer.

Make sure you check all the hardware store clearance isles and classified listings in the area before paying retail for an appliance.

Paint

Don’t skimp on paint. Get a top quality latex paint for high traffic areas. This will minimize damages and allow for stains to be cleaned easily without the need to do much touch up painting. In low traffic or raised areas, you can use a lower quality paint with a satin or flat finish to save money.

Window Treatments & Shelving

This area is unlimited with great choices. There are so many great designs that there really is no way to recommend any particulars. I do suggest that you visit tradeshows or seek out local wood workers to get ideas for custom shelves and unique wood furniture needs.

SURROUNDING

Decks are a great addition. Half of our time at home should be spent outside and a relaxation center like a deck or patio encourages us to get off the couch and be active. I spend most my time in tiny home living quarters of less than 800 sq. ft. One of the first things I do when I relocate is build a deck or patio to create the extra space I need for activities. My homes usually have a small sleeping area, a cooking area and an eating area that doubles as an office and entertainment room. My workout room, greenhouse, art studio, music room and any other needed space is blended into an outdoor deck or sunroom.

Decks need to have a solid foundation. If it is just a walk through area, it can be supported with basic 16×16 foundation pads on top soil but if it is an area with a framed structure and a large gathering space, it will need concrete pillars 2 feet deep.

The frame needs to be treated and/or rot resistant wood. There are a lot of options for decking. I suggest colored concrete for patio like areas and regular pine lumber elsewhere with a combination of tile or stone accents. The lumber needs water treated and stained every two years but the added cost of composite or using treated wood for the entire deck is not worth $100 of stain and 2 days of your time every two years. The lumber should be held together with weather proof screws with high torque heads. (NOT your normal Phillips bit head.) In most applications a hidden spacer bracket (Deck Lock) can be used to minimize visible screw heads.

Composite warps and fades under the elements just as fast as standard pine wood so it is not worth the extra cost.

Patios are one of my most enjoyable projects to design and implement. They set the tone for the surrounding landscape plan. A combination of rock, stone and colored/stamped concrete is amazing. Brick and block pads will eventually frustrate you as they catch dirt allowing weeds to seed and grow.

You will want any gaps to either be hairline thin or larger than a half inch wide. Gaps less than a half inch will trap dirt and sand and need continuous cleaning.

Sun Rooms have improved in design since the last time I built one so I will add more to this section after I do the next one. For now I just want to make sure you choose products that are energy star rated. There are still single pane glass options out there and they need to be avoided. You will not be please with the buildup of condensation and moisture damage and staining caused by single pane glass. You will also be dissatisfied with the noise pollution and lack of insulation for climate control.

What does enlightenment mean to you? Below I am listing some detailed examples of what it means to me.

Some cultures put more emphasis on the philosophy then others. Some cultures just have a modified version with a different name.

Regardless of where you are in the world, you will find beings on the path of enlightenment. If keywords like peace, love, kindness, forgiveness, health, fitness, nature, knowledge and so on key your attention, then you are on the Enlightenment path.

If you choose to reach further and attain a higher state of enlightenment, this guide is for you.

First, you must care for your self above all else. Your body, spirit and mind are the temple that you build your enlightenment upon and they need to be strong in order to shine your light onto others.

Internally you need to be knowledgeable of the science of breathing. The yin of human life requires oxygenated air aprox. every 4 minutes, water every 4 days and nutritional energy within aprox. 4 weeks to live. By the life law of yin, this means breathing is the most powerful form of enlightenment.

Those who have reached the highest levels of enlightenment, do so by mastering ancient breathing meditation techniques. Read “The Science of Breath” by Ramacharaka for detailed guides on how to use breath to reverse illness and many others benefits. Contact me for a free copy.

A healthy human body is over 60% water. Hydration health and nutritional diet are the next most important paths to enlightenment. Drinking at least 64 ounces of pure fluids daily is needed by the average human to maintain maximum health levels. A proper intake of fluids is needed to digest the solid food nutrients that follow.

The oldest of human artifacts and ancient scriptures support the claims that humans are meant to be herbivores. Plant based diets not only achieve a higher level of health enlightenment, but they also provide a solution to some of the world’s biggest evils. The “animals for food and resources” industry is the root of deforestation, the extinction of animals, animal cruelty and many more evils blocking the path to enlightenment. If you want more help getting over an addiction to meat, just watch some of Louie Psihoyos’ films like “Racing Extinction”.   I can get you copies of any of these films you like. It is not just about food consumption either. The slaughter of living creatures is also taking place to provide you with beauty products and medicine and much more. Researching the ingredients of products and refusing to support anything living being based is a major step up on your path.

Moving on, let’s talk muscular and circulatory enlightenment. All around fitness is crucial to happiness and other enlightened emotions. Physical forms of yoga, weight lifting, cardio, Reiki, massage and such have the power to transcend you to a new level. I escape the material world every few months to focus on these methods. Living outside of a temple in a modern day industrialized nation like the United States makes it very hard to maintain or increase your physical enlightenment. Frequent trips to solitude are needed to reset and vanquish the clutter blocking your path. But in the mean time, while you are caught in the rat race, do some random tummy tucks/push ups/squats and such throughout your day to stay balanced. If you are shy and concerned with what those around you will think, then you are failing to surround yourself with other enlightenment seekers and this will only block your path.

Beyond the physical, think about how you spend your time. Are you volunteering and helping contribute to enlightened causes around you? Are you spending the daylight by unplugging and venturing to enjoy hobbies outdoors? Do you think about how your actions affect the world and do your enlightened best? Simple actions like recycling, growing your own food and harnessing your own energy can change the world for the better over night if enough of us do it!

Treasure your freedom and defend it through these enlightened methods. Live in the moment; appreciate life like it is ending today! Grasp every second like you are on a vacation and the end is near, because it really is closer than we sometimes realize!

Peace, love, forgive, enlighten.

Utopia

Written by Tim Frentz (Author “Life’s Little Secrets) – The following first 30 day review comes from an experienced survivalist, spiritual guide and eco community consultant who has participated in multiple Utopian communities. Tim is an applicant in consideration and will be visiting Utopia in October until hopefully he is invited to stay as a community member.

Read more about the Helping Hands movement founder,  Tim Frentz, at: http://netvibes.com/HelpinHandsNet

THE REASON FOR THIS BLOG POST is to help promote and educate community living by keeping the viewership as high as possible during the life of the UTOPIA project. At a time where population growth is out of control and the USA civilization is on course to self destruction without a paradigm shift, a return to rural living using sustainable practices is crucial.

Tim Frentz leads a movement called the Helping Hands Network, which brings all these concepts together among those whom want to improve their lives and any others looking for guidance. In this blog, Frentz adds commentary and suggestions of how to improve on the current cast members actions.

We should all thank FOX Studios for investing over $50 million dollars into a project which has the potential to improve the flaws in the current status of United States culture.

The first few weeks of the project showed just how vast modern day personalities and beliefs really are. The producers have purposely chosen a mixed group in attempt to show a real scenario where drama and conflict would exist.

A perfect cast of peace loving know-it-all’s would make a great show and be very educational to the viewers with the rapid level of community bonding, however, the lessons to be learned by the chaos and conflict of the current cast has a vital role to play as well.

UtopiaScreenShot

1st 30 DAY REVIEW

DAY 1 – 8/29/2014

Not allowing the purchase of finished goods and limiting Pioneers to raw materials and bulk food stock would be much more interesting and educational to the viewers. It would really help the ratings! Not to mention, the participation in capitalism with an outside entity creates conflict over time which tugs at the Utopian dream.

We have already seen extremely heated debates with physical force directed at the destruction of the canned food surplus by Red and Dave because the options are left open. The more options they have, the more disagreement there will be! There has also been violence caused by the use of alcohol.

The attempt to obtain tools and needed items by trade with neighbors should be made before paying retail prices for new items!!!

The idea of exploring and gathering in a Armageddon scenario is much more appealing. Starting the community with enough food rations for 30 days for 15 people should prevent purchase of additional food but this cast shows an accurate census of how the current US culture thinks. 2/15 of the cast makes attempts to create solutions out of resources available before running to spend money at a store. About the same % of Americans have been conditioned by marketing to think the same way. Our Elders are sickened by the younger generations ignorance and creation of waste.

Food Growth (permaculture basics were not discussed in regards to water flow and garden design until Bella started reading about it in week 2) Plants are to be started in portable pots in a green house setting. Make a starter green house and move mature plants into permanent spots with raised compost nutrient rich soil. Mediterranean climate in the canyons is going to wipe out a majority of the sprouts!

Food Collection (fishing & hunting conservation is not discussed. Nut and fruit tree’s are mentioned on web cams but not in the Utopians minds enough. There is very little talk about foraging.)

Food Nutrition (Grocery shopping and $25-50 delivery fee’s cause the biggest arguments in early weeks. Calling a friend to place BARTER ads for neighbors produce on CRAIGSLIST is an obvious choice not being considered so far. Hosting farmers market booth’s during the Utopian Experience days should be a no-brainer.)

Shelter (weather and climate not discussed in episode one)

Microwave Radiation (research proven medical studies and relation to increased % of population infected with related cancers. Bella does warn them eventually.)

Time Management / Roles

Democracy (Rotating government and leadership at least gives them better understanding of what does or does not work.)

Sleeping areas and personal space (Production refused Bella the right to sleep outside due to a Mountain Lion being tracked in the area. Hopefully producers will agree to allow UTOPIANs to sign a release waiver in order to allow similar future freedoms.)

Finances

(Bartering is addressed on web cam chat when Bri shops for a Rooster but it is not in the front of Utopians minds as much as it should be when talking about shopping mostly because THEY DON’T CARE. Most of the Pioneers will all be gone by the time the money run’s out anyway.)

$197 spent for hoses, spray attachment, sprinkler & a circular skill saw!!! Natural irrigation via wood channelling and proper sponge soil creation would void the need for hoses and sprinklers.

$149 on 2 stage water filter to filter fluoride that may or may not exist in their water. (Public water could be used for any non drinking and cooking water. A natural water filter can be made on site to purify rain water collection in addition to boiling and treating with UV light for all drinking needs without spending $149 in normal conditions. Unfortunately, Clarita is in a drought and Utopia did not start with a water tower full of fresh water so an inline filter on the plumbing is a good investment AFTER they have earned spending money.)

$663 to run gas from main into the Barn (Due to the need for a certified material installer. Again NO RULES in Utopia so no building codes should be enforced but it is understandable that production is under a microscope by local authorities to follow their rules.)

DAY 13: AND THEY FINALLY HAVE their first formal organized meeting!!! FAIL…

Day 19: AND they finally have an over priced computer that could have been delivered via Craigslist for $150 on night 1.

Animal Use

Cat talks (Cats control vermin population but Utopians consider it as an indoor pet with a needed litter box instead of keeping it outdoors)

Cow diet (Need fed based on forage/meadow grazing with very little dry hay/alfalfa. They aerate and fertilize the soil while leaving waste nutrients for the chickens to follow in behind for maximum Crop Growth) FOX brings in a VET before improper care leads to a sick cow.

Cows are voted off UTOPIA on day 18. UTOPIAN cast did not include a competent cow care giver so they are in talks about how to maximize their value. Cash sale pre or post birth, barter for goats plus cash, slaughter for food. Somehow, the Utopians are talked into keeping the cow’s even though they can not afford to feed them. Viewers cry abuse, but in reality cows can take care of themselves just fine and the Utopians do keep spending money on their needs BUT it is not a wise financial decision. Viewers please stop screaming cow abuse.

Oat Barley v. Alfalfa v. other options

Chickens (Mobile tractor coop for insect control and garden compost nutrient production is in progress. However, Bri is too distracted by her toys to educate Bella on proper chicken etiquette. Chickens need moved one at a time to grazing if done forcefully. They will return willingly to their coop at night and do not need forced. Moving chickens without a mobile coop cost the residents a lot of eggs in the first weeks.) They still need a net above the grazing area to stop owls and hawks. Josh mentions this on day 15.

http://www.geofflawton.com/fe/59960-feed-chickens-without-grain

Day 13: Bella fails to educate on Chicken Cow relations. Cows completely digest organic matter and chickens feed off the remaining nutrients. Hex blows up at Bella with miss information that there feed taints eggs for 10 days (according to RED). The group trusts advice from one local farm store merchant and a neighbor (Lefty) without being open to higher knowledge in global Permaculture. The group needs a permaculture expert like me ASAP so they are not so easily led in the wrong direction.

Horse ($2000 purchase vs. leasing options for pure recreational purpose)

Goats v. Pigs (trade for a cow severally limits methane production, compost and hog feed resources)

COMPOSTING FAIL!!! (Free graze the cattle and 90% of your compost problem is solved. Barn at night only and mix compost into pasture soil daily. There is enough meadow for one cow if they are fenced in and given one side of the pond all to themselves.)

Skilled Trades (Utopian handymen rely on outside hired help instead of trusting their own abilities and creating parts out of raw materials)

Trash / Waste Management (Disease control)

DAY 17:

Group decides to have one dictator (final decision maker) with 3 day limits. Random pick the order. Hex is now in control then Bri. Nikki may never get her chance. Humorous that everyone in the groups acts like they are immune when the reality is that they could be evicted at any time.

DAY 18:

Don’t dump out raw milk because a fly is in it. Save it for me because my immune system is plenty capable of handling it…and so is yours!

FINALLY, 18 days late on clipping the chickens wings!!! Cow’s are on the way out. UTOPIA is about to lose it’s primary source of SOIL COMPOSTING. Unsure how much top soil is around but the driveways and main meadows show very unhealthy rocky soil which need’s the cow manure to rebuild it’s nutrient base for future crop growth.

$75 is not very much money to place plastic sandwich bags with water around the property to control the fly problem according to AARON.  (omg…really?) Again, he is making a financial decision without the group. I cover natural pest control’s in my book “Life’s Little Secrets” here: http://wp.me/p13eVj-y9

$125 to the Vet $150 for groceries ($50 delivery fee EVERY WEEK) $51 for 17 plates instead of asking a neighbor for some free ones!

$475 for a computer you could get for practically free on Craigslist. (I trade and repair outdated laptops and I get them for the cost of shipping all the time)

DAY 19: Sept 16, TUE

UTOPIA Experience is conceptualized in the meeting (All UTopians skills on display in REN-Fest WanderLust Style)

UtopiaExperience

Producers make the major mistake of NOT opening voting on primetime. No mention of texting or calling in to vote the next eviction. They choose to go with the internal UTOPIAN voting only apparently this round which will not help increase their ratings. YOU must make the viewers feel like we are part of the show with as much interaction as possible!!!    😦

DAY 20:

A dead tree is shown behind the barn but no one has addressed chopping and stacking wood for heat furnaces using the oil barrels. Water catching systems are still not discussed and rain is in the forecast. Compost straw is being hauled off site instead of building green house soils.

They need a Craigslist errand person outside the complex to go around and barter the things they have to offer for the items they need but no one has addressed it yet. I could of had a great laptop for only $75 worth of trade, at the gate within 12 hours of being approved if I was a current Utopian and allowed to call my local network team.

*IF each UTOPIAN’s profile was connected to a live cam channel that followed them around specifically as much as possible, that would increase paid subscribers astronomically.

RED tells Amanda some basics on raising cows and chickens with their basic diet needs. He still has some to learn about Permaculture principals and composting for gardening but he and Bella have the most experience. Red thinks you rake and dry manure but for soil building compost you pile, mix, cover and turn it every few days for 2 weeks and then spread it out. Amanda continues asking Red for his review of others participation.

Josh continues thinking he needs to call a plummer or other trade specialists instead of doing things like UNCLOGGING THE SINK by himself.

The group don’t know toothpaste is simple baking soda. $1 worth lasts 1 person a full year!!!

The $149+20 delivery water filter is returned now that money is short. They can make one themselves for those that it matters the most too. A basic pitcher filter is only $15 and will remove ABOUT 50% of the Clarita public water Chlorine and fluoride particles. But it will always taste like chlorine. THEY need rain or permission to forage a nearby stream so they can get some fresh water.

Day 21

Ruler Change Meeting. Bri passes her turn to Bella. Bella declares ALL woman combined dictatorship.

Day 22 Friday 9/19

Computer arrives. How will they handle scheduling for use of it. How much negativity is this going to cause? Now that it is obvious to all that they are about out of money and food, tempers get out of control.

Day 23 SAT

5+ show up for boot camp at 9-10:30am

30 some show up for the Utopia Experience Fest

4 stay for Yoga

“The Experience” shows that it is possible to sustain the cost of monthly utility expenses with income from a monthly Ren Fest type of business. If the Utopians can come together to live off grid without water and power bills, they would not have to base their Utopia so strongly on making money. Unfortunately the current cast is mostly made up of city slicker who don’t imagine the possibilities of living without money.

 Day 24 SUN

New Utopian Ernie, 39 from Oceanside arrives. Brings more experience with plumbing. Voting on eviction did not happen first and viewers are confused.

Day 25 MON

My warnings about the garden being damaged by wildlife/nature by not starting in Greenhouses (controlled environments) went un-addressed and this day they discover Deer eating everything.

Budget meeting – 20% taxes ; 30% growth & savings ; 40% bills ; 10% personal spending ;

Teams are finally formed (House, garden, barn)

Rumored that 2 new come in Tonight or Tuesday and then NEXT Tuesday, they finally vote out someone. Looks like one forced (voted) eviction per month may be the trend, in addition to those who leave voluntarily.

RED goes financially independent and sets his own timebomb for being voted off.

$1000/month for COW FEED!!! Not including shots etc. The cow is not able to sustain itself off the lands meadow and it needs to be traded for a goat. They also need to contract a deal for free milk/cheese as part of the trade. They can not afford cattle.

House budget. HOT Water $350-700 heater plus $300 shower & tub. Tankless estimate according to Josh is $1200 BUT production must not be letting them order off eBay and Amazon because you can get them for $100-200. SOLAR IS BEST AND FREE.

http://tinyurl.com/o5x6kx3

IDIOT Josh is clueless on Solar water heating and ridicules Nikki.

Day 26 TUE

They show enough 2×6 and 2x10s to build the greenhouse today and “Contractor” Josh has left them uncovered in the weather to warp. His IQ is shrinking every day.

Leadership meetings lead to voting project managers. Bella refuses to participate and does not oppose Hex being put in place as garden manager. No one opposes Bris for Barn and no one opposes Josh for construction. Kristin goes unopposed as internet project leader with Chris and Nikki as helpers and replacement web team.

Day 27 WED

new government with Mike (the joker). Bella is talked into staying by production likely because they don’t want to have to replace more people then they can avoid. (travel costs for new Utopians adds up)

Day 28 TR 9/25
voting is finally opened to viewers and viewers get to pick one of 3 Utopians to be placed on the shortlist by SAT morning 9/27. A few days later, the Utopians will vote from the selected 3.

*The process should be held every 2 weeks. There is an abundance of current Utopians who are lazy and not making an effort to educate and improve for the benefit of the community and it would be more enjoyable to watch as well as more educational if the slackers were removed quicker in a bi-weekly process.

Calf born and several of the cast start talking about selling them before they even care for the calf.

Day 29

Calf watch day mostly

Day 30 SAT 9/27

Bri selected as internet and Utopian choice for eviction. Aaron and Red are 2nd and 3rd finalists for the first eviction vote.

DAYS OF IMPROVMENT

Day 33 TUE 9/30

Green Houses and HydroPonics are again addressed and may be brought up for group vote soon.

RED tells everyone he is ready to leave and Bri is saved. She is guaranteed to be out next unless someone else walks out before then. Really hope a bi-weekly eviction process is put in place to keep the attention of live stream viewers.

TELEVISED EPISODEs REVIEW

#1 – the editors fail to introduce the key concepts to survival like rules on burning wood and foraging outside boundary lines to satisfy dietary needs. Electricity and plumbing is mentioned but they do not cover enough detail.

#2 – again electricity is filmed but no explanation of why a trench needs to be dug and where the cable wire is coming from. Why are the Pioneers not trading for goods and foraging for food. Tell the viewers what is hidden around the compound to increase the suspense. Will the Utopians figure out what resources are right under their noses? Is the water from a well or is it tainted public flouride & chlorine? Is the pond connected to a natural spring or is man made? Will there use of it for irrigation deplete their fresh water supply?  Stay tuned…..

#3 – there is a big buzz about the episode 2 ratings being low. Will this experiment survive more than 7+ episodes (>30) some days?) If the producers could get even one celebrity to accept the challenge of living in this Utopian scenario for a full 7 days, it would grab the attention of more viewers. The projects start time is perfect with the arrival of fall and more people retreating indoors from cooler weather. If they could even get a couple people of interest to take a 24 hour challenge every few weeks, this project will have the ratings it deserves.

#4 – There still is not enough focus on the replacement and eviction process. Viewers comments on social media agree that the members who do not show serious efforts to learn rural living basics and improve their flaws need replaced every 2 weeks. If more qualified Utopians are not allowed into the experiment at a bi-weekly rate, the project will not achieve UTOPIA within the 12 month goal because too many of the current problem causing Utopians will still remain. There are plenty of better applicants (like Tim) waiting to get their call!

MEET THE PAST CAST:

missing Pioneer #16 Andrea Cox – Violated Mobile Phone and Communication policies before Day 1 – http://www.ebuzznew.com/utopia-reality-show-contestant-booted-before-filming-begins

Pioneer Dave: 32 NY Big City Nomad. Trying to recondition from a past in crime & prison rehabilitation. Full of love but mentally unstable. Emotional challenges come from being raised without loving parents and other absence of healthy role models in his youth.

Pioneer Jonathan: 44 TN Pastor.  Brings a strong christian religious presence but accepts others spirituality. Lists enemies as non believers which needs deeper definition. Brings peace and calm to the chaos. Great at avoiding confrontation to minimize the feeding of chaotic fires.

Week 2 Replacement Rhonda: 48 Politically driven. Offensive minded. Out spoken. Willing to work hard but has trouble taking advice. Voted out mostly due to her strong personality but apparently a rule was made that the pioneers were immune from being cast out this week and ONE of the two new-comers had to be voted out after only 5 days. Several of the pioneer 14 have less to contribute to the health of the community.

Week 4 Pioneer RED: Volunteers to leave to get home to family and his commitment to the Blue Grass Boys on the Discovery Channel . An actor with previous engagements and opportunities on TV should have never been selected in the first place for the Utopia project. He occupied nearly 5 weeks of opportunity others like me would have used more productively for the benefit of the project and viewers wanting to learn how CoHo living really works.

What Have I learned so far from these early Utopians?

there is a Documentary called Serious Disclosure from Bella

Without internet access to research and verify facts, misinformation is leading the society a muck due to their in-experience in many basic survival skills. (15 days of par treatment and under use of animals for 1 example. The land is also only being utilized at around 60% efficiency.)

EASTER ISLAND – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter_Island  Day 15 (one of the first spiritual enlightening discussions lasted only a few minutes between Nikki and Bella)

<br><br>

SUMMARY

It is early, but so far barely 3 or so UTOPIANs have shown the ability to survive a full year in this scenario without outside reliance for food and resources. Very few show the ability to live among the others peacefully. So far, many of the UTOPIANs spend their free time sitting around arguing instead of planning and doing physical chores to improve the health of the community. Apparently there is a restraint by the producers that is preventing them from gathering food surrounding them freely.

It is unfortunate that there are indeed rules in UTOPIA. The California regulations on fire codes and building permits and inspections have been discussed as reasoning for setbacks and inability to enjoy bonfires etc.

Why was (RED – from the Blue Grass Boys on Discovery Channel) chosen? There should be a restriction against selecting an actor. DeDecker has modeling experience on TV’s Skin Wars but at least she’s not a regular actor on the show. https://twitter.com/DedekerWinston/status/496076641458999296

HH Logo 1

WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY:

If I was there already, I would have proposals for several improvements brought to the groups attention including;

– an educational hour with rotating teachers and topics related to improving the health of the community. (I would hold a short TED talk time during the Farmers Market/Utopia Experience to bring a new attraction to the group and I would also add it to the dating auction portion of the website for income during the week)

– more structured planning and summary meetings on Mondays & Fridays.

– I would offer to build & run a greenhouse and nursery business to generate revenue (Revenue is their #1 priority after survival. They wasted most of their start up capital like children would but were saved by helpful neighbors who paid to attend a weekend festival event for a couple weeks to build their savings back up.)

– make benches and other wood creations to sell (Carvings etc.)

– a water wheel for butter churning and power (if the source is from a stream but it appears to be on an electric pump which limits the options)

– crop watering around the pond swell.

– proper Permaculture for water conservation, food production, animal grazing and naturally filtered drinking water.

– I would teach and learn new yoga practices with Nikki (and flirt a little I’m sure)

– I would also learn and teach new fitness workouts with Aaron and get some rec time like soccer or Frisbee with him to keep encouraging the others to stay more active.

– I would bring my harmonica to the band

– I would help organize all the groups skills together in one unified event day to raise revenue. Invite local farmers to gather and host a farmers market. (We do Community teaching and Ag days and group lunch on Saturday’s at most CoHousing Eco Village Communities)  *Day 19 they finally come up with a similar idea with a RenFest twist. *Day 27 Josh finally points out the idea of hosting a farmers market.

It causes me pain to see enlightened and self educated pioneers being shun by their tribe. Bella struggles with communication skills and I could help her ease her troubles in many ways. I know Nikki would have welcomed my Reiki and partner yoga efforts during her bodies painful dietary times. My training in meditation will help heal such pains quicker through hypnotic practices. Aaron would appreciate my participation in sporting games, recreation, edible plants, and additions to his workout routines.

Everyone would enjoy my 37 years of adventure stories around the campfires and my experiences with problem solving in similar situations that they are currently experiencing. I also have a built successful money making ventures based on virtual business plan concepts which is a primary current struggle for them to generate income.

EVICTIONS

For the first eviction round, the rule was that one of the new residents must be voted out and all the original 14 are safely immune. We are told there is no rules but the original Utopian 14 do not even consider voting out their weakest links among themselves before considering casting out one of the new-comers who were only with them 5 days.  It’s impossible to fully know a member’s potential in only 5 days and be forced to vote between 2 of them.

Will the same “rule” be in effect at the end of week 4???? The Utopians got to vote the top 3 possible evictions. The viewers got to decide the tie breaker. Viewers voted for Bri but the cast voted for RED because he wanted to leave.

The present cast of UTOPIANs would be very challenging to co-exist with but I’m looking forward to the chance when I get called up.

Out of 317 million in the US, only a few thousand have signed up for UTOPIA and less than 40 or so will make it through the selection process. Out of that 40, only a few of us have a moderate level of experience living in sustainable Co-Housing type Utopian communities.

Typical Monday with hot tub yoga and lap swimming then off to Shhmokewear, only this day Sean was going with me so I didn’t need to take the bus.We got his contract in agreeance and SI was off to another milemarker.

On Tuesday I biked Elysian mountain around Dodger stadium. I was still looking for a good pickup soccer pilada in the downtown area with no luck. My friend Sandy that I met at Occupy was trying to find a time to show me around. I checked with her as I was biking and she told me we would have to reschedule so I took my time going over some steap dark paths before heading back to Shhmokewear.

On Friday we packed up to hike Death Valley and the Saline Valley Springs. While waiting for Sean to show up a flock of nearly 30 wild parots flew into our tree. It was a United States bird watchers dream opportunity that rarely happens. There are not very wild parrots outsideMiami.

It took us 8 hours with stops to make it to the Big Pine entrance to Death Valley. It was about 250 miles from LA. The road was not marked to our meetup spot which was called Eureka Dunes. There were about 10 other vehicles camping on the dunes but none of them were with the meetup group so we took off solo the next morning after hiking around the area. First we traded some Shhmokewear for 4 gallons of water and directions.

The mountain pass road from the dunes to the spring was 30 miles shorter then the highway wrap around but took 2 hours to make it over so risky rock roads.

At the peak there is a hidden spot the locals call Marble Rock. It is worth trying to find but I am not going to describe it because I enjoy the mystery. There was another area called the racetrack. This spot is a shallow lake bed that freezes and then the wind pushes the rocks around on the ice like they are racing.

We stopped the only car that passed us and traded some Shhmokewear for 4 gallons of gas and then set up camp by the springs.

As we drove through the valley floor towards the Oasis, I was amazed to see a combination of volcano blow out, faulte and ice glacier deposit

The hot springs are amazing. The main spring has trees all around it. There is a fish pond with Koi and cold water pools and a fire pit. Over the years people have added many shade awnings and benches and other comfort features. We chilled there all day reading, drawing, writing etc.

Over time people have added gravity pressure plumbing to create warm showers. The average visitor is around 60 and enjoys being nude.

As the sun set on our fall solstice I caught a glimpse on Venus for 3 minutes while meditating in the hot spring before it chased the sun behind the mountain. The full moon and stars and sounds of the desert at night was all one more giant spot of heaven on earth. Wild burros and coyotes scampered around our tent. I crashed early and woke up at Sunrise.

The reds and orange colors painted a masterpiece over the peaks of the cliffs as I did some 6am yoga in serenity.

I took some pictures and alerted the boys before laying back down for a while. The others opened their eyes and Sean spouted “the sun is already up”, before falling back asleep.

Sean got up right after me and went to the spring while I did a workout and then prepared an applesauce and fruit breakfast.

We packed everything and started taking the tent down with Will sleeping inside. While the boys where tieing the gear down I went to aask our neighbor if we could us their air compressor to put our tires up to pavement pressure. After they complied and started pulling out we discovered our battery was not turning the starter over so I quickly waved them back over.

None of us were anxious to go back to the city but we all wanted to see Shhmokewear grow so we sucked it up. I was going to go have dinner with Bella when we got back but when I called she was still upset about me not giiving her enough attention so I left my stuff at the office and went home with Sean to relax. She may never ask to see me again since I am so busy. Only time would tell.

I had an Oprah moment tonight! One of the largest voids and mysteries of my life was fulfilled. Thought I would share this happy romance story with those closest to me.
~~~~
During the summer of 1996 to summer 1997 I was traveling from college in Lincoln to visit this girl in Red Cloud. We wrote often and made plans for her to move to Lincoln to live with me. Suddenly the letters stopped. I waited a few months and then went looking for her at the end of the semester.
I knew her mom was hiding from an abusive spouse/boyfriend so I assumed they were on the run. Neighbors confirmed that they packed in the middle of the night and vanished.
I waited a few weeks, expecting to get a letter once they were settled. As time went by, I started to think maybe she lost my information in the rush. This was before cell phones etc. when we most relied on paper address books/journals.
I started calling families in the area with the same name, posting flyers, classified ads and following leads in the surrounding 100 mile area plus the Tucson AZ area where she mentioned a grandma in one of her letters. Always hitting dead ends.
As the internet tools became available, I searched for her aliases every single month for the next 14+ years, always hitting a dead end!
Tonight at approximately 11pm, FACEBOOK sent me the following letter from a girl using a different first name….
~~~~~~
“Once upon a time, 14 years ago, you rode your bike getting caught in a rain storm on your way home, is it coincidence that this this same girl still keeps your photos in her closet. Tonight I went through my past… And remembered the amazing experiences I feel we shared. Curiosity killed me and on to Facebook I went… where I found the man who stemmed from the boy I was once crazy about. Not trying to disrupt your life by any means. However, if you remember me, maybe we can make memories.. -TC
~~~~~~
After all these years of living with a void in my heart and the worry of what really happened to her, I picked up the phone and we got reunited.
It turned out that she was beaten and put in a traumatized coma and her mom didn’t find my contact info to let me know. I tried not to demand answers and instead just listened to why she thought it was best to let me go. They moved to Arizona and she was convinced the long distant relation would not work plus she was traumatized psychologically so she never tried to reach me again until tonight.
Why tonight, after all these years, I asked?
She replied that she looks at my letters and pictures from time to time but thinks that after having a kid, then a second and a third and being married and then divorced that it would ruin the fantasy of my past role as the motorcycle hero riding into her life. Finally, she was telling our story to a friend and the friend convinced her she was crazy for never reaching out….so she finally looked me up and said hello!
I thought you would all enjoy hearing a happy fantasy story turned true so here ya have it.
While it is too early to judge, I will just say for now, that I will fly through Denver on my way back from L.A. and spend a weekend with her to see how things go.
So happy to close the unsolved mystery after all these years!
THIS SERMON brought to you by “a girl I once knew well”
The girl I once knew is great and I can not talk about someone without them being part of the discussion but in summary I knew a girl who lost her way with material possessions and over spending and let her debt stress consume her decision making towards the partners role in her life. I helped that said girl improve and increase her efficiency for 7 months before the lord decided it was time for me to give up and move on.
Over 15 some times this has been my life and the lord puts me in positions to help others and usually the 6 month mark is always when he shows me to the door…
Funny how it seems to always be that way. It is hard for a girl to love a man unconditionally and have full faith that they will be financially stable without being “shown” the money.
It comes to that a lot but it is how I will know when I find “the one”…
$ is A ROOT of evil when not used for the greater good of society and community and I have yet to find the right lady in my life who has been touched by God deep enough to understand where the comfort lines between savings and spending best serve the tithing purpose…
here here.. well said. I know my sermon on material items is old age traditional but the spirit of my soul is 3rd world, depressed and impoverished. The average Modern United states citizen has let the media desires from large corporations blind them into thinking they need far beyond the necessities of life to be happy.
These wants are not reachable by the middle class and they expand into credit that has been forced upon them since college campus festival days. Homes are over financed and mortgaged to fail and crash down around those who lose their jobs or get pay cuts.
The dollar is not the dollar of our elders. It is not longer based on real gold but rather printed on interest loaned by China who has acquired ALL of our nations gold.
If we do not grow our own and make our own like our elders, we will continue to fail and separate and segregate the wealthy and powerful from those below.
Those who understand that they have the power to make a change by voting are surrounded by my presence. Every purchase is a vote to support those attached to that purchase. Purchase small and increase the power of “the people”.
You can purchase local and fresh and fair trade and independent and community needs OR you can increase the distance between the wealthy and pawns by supporting large world corporations like WalMart, Starbucks, Monsanto, Cargill, GE, and so on.
Those who make attempts to improve are happy to be with me.
Those who refuse to listen, shun me and eventually remove me from their life and I leave the battle between them and their God alone.
Sustainable Living Roadshow
Sustainable Living Roadshow (SLR) is a caravan of educators and entertainers who tour the country in a fleet of renewable fuel vehicles to empower communities and individuals to utilize sustainable living strategies for a healthier planet. Visiting k-12 schools, university campuses and community festivals across the United States, the caravan sets up off-the-grid eco-carnivals with experiential learning villages, featuring workshops, speakers, and entertainment. http://www.sustainablelivingroadshow.org/
Living sustainably in the traditional sense means that one is living 100% from resources within their own local location and non reliant upon aid from others. In a more modern sense, sustainable living generally means a family or single residence is using less resources then what is calculated as producible per capita in their area from local resources.
Living a sustainable life comes with sacrifices most Americans do not want to accept.
Most of the world’s civilizations keep their traditions alive by supporting laws made to encourage standards of living that require a bit of “sacrifice”.
Now when I talk about “sacrifices”, I am referring to the act of physically meeting the primary needs of survival with minimal use of technology.
Starting right now as you read this, you need to get your faith back. You once had a dream of creating material wealth without relying on others by means of self employment. Make those dreams reality just like all your ancestors before you. For over 99.9% of the recorded history of man, our elders lived long comfortable lives living sustainably and recent infatuations with industry and capitalism is changing populated societies.
It is easy to live sustainably in rural areas if you follow the guidance of traditionalists like me. I spend my time in rural areas of Maui, East Texas, Nebraska, PA, and California mostly so you will read about sustainability in these areas. Occasionally I end up in other countries as well.
Here are some examples of the sacrifices we make in the USA but that are still considered part of the norm around most of the world.
– Minimize Everything from consumption to waste. The process begins by growing and collecting natural resources. Use/make/buy 1 natural dish each instead of having cabinets full of unused items; wash dishes with home made soap and cold water or solar warm water after each use. Use and make natural products when at all possible. It is amazing how much is made out of hemp. The process is the circle of life so the beginning closely follows the end in time. Meaning, that we reuse as much as possible until the end of the useful consumption life and then we recycle the resources into new things.
– Learn to maintain and maximize the efficiency of what technology you do use. Repair your own vehicles; fix your home appliances; do your own yard work; use one laptop and a mobile smart phone with a satellite connection *(see http://cannonsatellite.com ) or phone data plan; use the laptop for practically everything including tv/movie loading. Do your best to power everything off of renewable energy.
– Travel with mass transit and bikes. For those heroes who sacrifice their lives doing public services and health care, some duties can not be avoided without extreme uses of fuel but for most people in urban areas there is enough fuel wasted to power the rest of the world every HOUR!
These are just a few broad examples of what principles I try to follow as much as possible. Many more specific examples are focused on in follow up articles so bookmark this link and enjoy my many stories.
The United States of America UNDER Repair!
WHAT IS WRONG with the U.S.A.!
The OCCUPY movement is all about bringing light and awareness to the sleeping ignorant citizens of the country by educating them on the wrongs that the government is doing to them and on their behalf.
Here are a few summaries and links to what is wrong with the USA right now and why I lead the restoration efforts everywhere I travel! Fight now if you want to restore the original Constitution of the United States and retain your freedom and Bill of Rights!
First let’s say WHAT IS RIGHT! The Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It IS THAT simple! I love it and honor and cherish it. Anything that oposes the founding fathers will find difficult obstacles surrounding my friends. Democratic governing provides the people freedoms and rights but what happens when the politicians are forced into corruption? Some give in easier then others while some just dissapear with no trace.
World power and dominance has been achieved beyond reason. Our borders are safe and secure and the people live in comfort but the US has expanded too far and enforces power beyond the reach of peaceful intention.
Here is a list of FACTS that are challenging the worlds respect for the United States of America and its citizens.
Department of Homeland Security
More like the Department of Privacy Invasion! The U.S.A. has invaded lands on foreign continents to prosper off their natural resources. After out growing our countries resources due to irresponsible reproduction and wasteful resource management, we use our media and scare tactics like 911 to influence the votes of our citizens and convince them we NEED TO Invade the privacy of selective citizens because THEY COULD BE A TERRORIST. We are already a world super power and are borders are safe and secluded. Regardless of how many defensive preventions we may have, a terrorist organization is not bombing inside our borders. We should not have military personel in foreign continents beyond the minimum security needed for our peace keeping Embassys and United Nations partners.
On our land we have a system that has become TOO DETAILED. We have over optimized our systems! In the early days we believed in our neighbors and took care of ourselves. Now we have placed too much power in others and we have alienated the peasants from the aristocrats.
WE RIG OUR ELECTIONS!
“With information provided from the Voter News Service, NBC was the first network to project Gore the winner in Florida at 7:48 pm.? At 7:50 pm ,CNN and CBS project Gore the winner in Florida as well.” By 8:02 pm , all five networks and the Associated Press had called Gore the winner in Florida. Even the VNS called Gore the winner at 7:52 pm. At 2:16 am, Fox calls Florida for Bush, NBC follows at 2:16 am. ABC is the last network to call the Florida for Bush, at 2:20 am, while AP and VNS never call Florida for Bush. At 2:16 a.m., the call was made: Fox News Channel, with Bush’s first cousin John Ellis running its election desk, was the first to project Florida — and the presidency — for the Texas governor.
Government officials were instructed to ignore Terrorism updates by Richard A. Clarke who was the head coordinator of National Security from 1992-2003. Here are some of his comments before resigning.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_A._Clarke
(after requesting a meeting with the Principal cabinet members in the months leading up to 9/11)
MR. CLARKE: I did get a response. The response was that in the Bush administration I should, and my committee, the counterterrorism security group, should report to the deputies committee, which is a sub-cabinet level committee, and not to the principals, and that therefore it was inappropriate for me to be asking for a principals meeting. Instead, there would be a deputies meeting.
MR. ROEMER: So, does this slow the process down to go to the deputies rather than to the principals or a small group, as you had previously done?
MR. CLARKE: It slowed it down enormously, by months. First of all, the deputies committee didn’t meet urgently in January or February. Then, when the deputies committee did meet, it took the issue of al Qaeda as part of a cluster of policy issues, including nuclear proliferation in South Asia, democratization in Pakistan, how to treat the problems, the various problems, including narcotics and other problems in Afghanistan, and, launched on a series of deputies meetings extending over several months to address al Qaeda in the context of all of those interrelated issues. That process probably ended, I think, in July of 2001, so we were readying for a principals meeting in July, but the principals’ calendar was full, and then they went on vacation, many of them, in August, so we couldn’t meet in August, and therefore the principals met in September.
“The Aug. 6, 2001, document, known as the President’s Daily Brief, has been the focus of intense scrutiny because it reported that bin Laden advocated airplane hijackings, that al-Qaida supporters were in the United States and that the group was planning attacks here.” Clarke J. Scott, “Clarke Gave Warning on Sept. 4, 2001; Testimony Includes Apology to Families of Sept. 11 Victims, Associated Press, March 25, 2004.
“There is ample documentation demonstrating that the Reagan and Bush administrations supplied critical military technologies that were put directly to use in the construction of the Iraqi war machine. There is also strong evidence indicating that the executive branch’s failure to crack down on illegal weapons traffickers or keep track of third party transfers of U.S. weaponry allowed a substantial flow of U.S.-origin military equipment and military components to make their way to Iraq.” William D. Hartung, Weapons at War; A World Policy Institute Issue Brief, May 1995. See also, Alan Friedman, Spider’s Web: The Secret History of How the White House Illegally Armed Iraq, (Bantam Books, 1993); Kenneth R. Timmerman, The Death Lobby: How the West Armed Iraq, (Houghton, Mifflin, 1991).
“The 27 classified pages of a congressional report about Sept. 11 depict a Saudi government that not only provided significant money and aid to the suicide hijackers but also allowed potentially hundreds of millions of dollars to flow to Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups through suspect charities and other fronts, according to sources familiar with the document. One U.S. official who has read the classified section said it describes ‘very direct, very specific links’ between Saudi officials, two of the San Diego-based hijackers and other potential co-conspirators ‘that cannot be passed off as rogue, isolated or coincidental.’” Of all the hijackers, 15 of the 19 were Saudi. Josh Meyer, “Report Links Saudi Government to 9/11 Hijackers, Sources Say,” Los Angeles Times, August 2, 2003.
WE AIDED the Deportation of the hired Terrorists! (aiding the debate that the corrupt politicians were calling the shots)
“Now, what I recall is that I asked for flight manifests of everyone on board and all of those names need to be directly and individually vetted by the FBI before they were allowed to leave the country. And I also wanted the FBI to sign off even on the concept of Saudis being allowed to leave the country. And as I recall, all of that was done. It is true that members of the Bin Laden family were among those who left. We knew that at the time. I can’t say much more in open session, but it was a conscious decision with complete review at the highest levels of the State Department and the FBI and the White House.” Testimony of Richard Clarke, Former Counter terrorism Chief, National Security Council, before The Senate Judiciary Committee, September 3, 2003.
“I was making or coordinating a lot of decisions on 9/11 and the days immediately after. And I would love to be able to tell you who did it, who brought this proposal to me, but I don’t know. Since you pressed me, the two possibilities that are most likely are either the Department of State, or the White House Chief of Staff’s Office. But I don’t know.” Testimony of Richard A. Clarke before the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, March 24, 2004.
After the airspace reopened, six chartered flights with 142 people,mostly Saudi Arabian nationals, departed from the United States between September 14 and 24. One flight, the so-called Bin Ladin flight, departed the United States on September 20 with 26 passengers, most of them relatives of Usama Bin Ladin. It should be noted that the US Customs and Border Protection document released by the Department of Homeland Security under the FOIA, Feb 24, 2004 lists 162 Saudi Nationals who flew out of the country between 9/11/2001 and 9/15/2001, departing from New York’s Kennedy airport, Washington’s Dulles, and Dallas Fort Worth. http://www.judicialwatch.org/archive/2004/homelandsecurity.pdf.
The U.S. shows Racist / Religious persecution against Muslims and others
“In the days, weeks and months following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, hundreds of American immigrants were rounded up and detained, often under harsh or abusive conditions, in the name of keeping America safe. Not because of evidence (or even sound hunches) that they were involved in the terrorist attacks that brutally ended the lives of more than 3,100 people. Not because they were found to have ties to – or even knowledge of – terrorist groups who might threaten American security in the future. Instead, hundreds of immigrants were arbitrarily snared in this dragnet, marked for arrest and thrown (literally, at times) in jail. The exact number is unknown, because the government refuses to release that information. They had one thing in common: Almost all were Arab or South Asian men, and almost all were Muslim… Once arrested, many immigrants were labeled “of interest” to the September 11 investigation and thrown into legal limbo – detained for weeks or months in connection with a criminal investigation, but denied the due process rights that they would have been entitled to had they actually been charged with crimes.” ACLU, “America’s Disappeared: Seeking International Justice for Immigrants Detained after September 11,” January 2004.
In 1972, two airmen were suspended for failing to take their medical examination. One was George W. Bush and the other was James R. Bath. James R. Bath was the Texas money manager for the Bin Laden family and they invested in BUSH.
“According to a 1976 trust agreement, drawn shortly after [George H. W.] Bush was appointed director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Saudi Sheik Salem M. Binladen appointed Bath as his business representative in Houston. Binladen, along with his brothers, owns Binladen Brothers Construction, one of the largest construction companies in the Middle East.”? Jerry Urban, “Feds Investigate Entrepreneur Allegedly Tied to Saudis,” Houston Chronicle, June 4, 1992.
Mr. Bath invested in Mr. Bush’s first major business venture, Arbusto Energy, in the late 1970’s after Mr. Bath began working for Salem bin Laden. Jim Rutenberg, “A Film to Polarize Along Party Lines,” New York Times, May 17, 2004.
Bath’s business relationship with Salem bin Laden, and other wealthy Saudi businessmen, has been well documented.? See, e.g., Mike Ward, “Bin Laden Relatives Have Ties to Texas,” Austin American-Statesman, November 9, 2001; Jerry Urban, “Feds Investigate Entrepreneur Allegedly Tied to Saudis,” Houston Chronicle, June 4, 1992; Thomas Petzinger Jr., et al., “Family Ties: How Oil Firm Linked to a Son of Bush Won Bahrain Drilling Pact,” The Wall Street Journal, December 6, 1991.
“[E]arly 1980s tax records reviewed by TIME show that Bath invested $50,000 in Bush’s energy ventures and remained a stockholder until Bush sold his company to Harken in 1986.” Jonathan Beaty, “A Mysterious Mover of Money and Planes,” Time Magazine, October 28, 1991
Bush was investigated by the S.E.C.? The James Baker law partner who helped Bush beat the rap from the SEC was a man by the name of Robert Jordon, who, when George W. became president was appointed ambassador to Saudi Arabia.?
“A week before George W. Bush’s 1990 sale of stock in Harken Energy Co., the firm’s outside lawyers cautioned Bush and other directors against selling shares if they had significant negative information about the company’s prospects.? The sale came a few months before Harken reported significant losses, leading to an investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission.? The June 15, 1990, letter from the Haynes and Boone law firm wasn’t sent to the SEC by Bush’s attorney Robert W. Jordan until Aug. 22, 1991, according to a letter by Jordan.? That was one day after SEC staff members investigating the stock sale concluded there was insufficient evidence to recommend an enforcement action against Bush for insider trading.” Peter Behr, “Bush Sold Stock After Lawyers’ Warning,” Washington Post, November 1, 2002.?
Congress did not read the Patriot Act before voting on it.
“The morning [of October 12], the House voted 337-79 to pass the bill.? The outraged dissenters complained that no one could possibly have had the time to read the enormously complex 342-page law that amended fifteen different federal statutes and that had only been printed out hours before.” Steven Brill, After; How America Confronted the September 12 Era, (Simon & Schuster, NY: 2003).
On March 19th, 2003, George W. Bush and the United States military invaded Iraq, which had never attacked or threatened to attack the United States.? A nation that had never murdered a single American citizen.”
“Iraq never threatened the US, let alone Australia. The basic consideration was and remains the perception of America’s wider strategic interest in the Middle East.” Richard Woolcott, “Thread bare Basis To The Homespun Yarn That Led Us Into Iraq,” Sydney Morning Herald, November 26, 2003—(Woolcott was Australia’s Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs And Trade during the first Gulf War.)
For definition of murder of civilians (as opposed to combatants), see Article 3 of the Geneva Convention . (“For persons taking no active part in the hostilities, the following acts are and shall remain prohibited at any time (a) Violence to life and person, in particular murder of all kinds.”)
The Bush administration announced that it would roll-back ‘modest’ increases of benefits to troops. The Army Times noted, “the administration announced that on Oct. 1 it wants to roll back recent modest increases in monthly imminent-danger from $225 to $150 (a cut of 33%) and family-separation allowances from $250 to $100 (a cut of 60%) for troops getting shot at in combat zones.”
“Thanks to a law passed this year, troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and other high-risk areas now receive $225 a month in supplemental pay. That’s an increase of $75 from the previous amount for combat pay. Under that same law, soldiers who have been forced to leave behind spouses and children receive $250 a month in additional separation pay to help cover child care and other additional expenses caused by assignment overseas. That’s an increase of $150 over the previous supplement. … In its 2004 budget request, the Pentagon asked Congress to cut both combat pay and separation pay back to the previous levels.”
“Our Opinions: Proposal to Reduce Pay No Way to Salute Military,” Atlanta Journal Constitution, August 15, 2003.
“Only four of the 535 members of Congress have children in the military; only one, Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., has a child who fought in Iraq.” Kevin Horrigan, “Hired Guns,” St. Louis Post-Dispatch, May 11, 2003.
We process 95% of our food production!
Organic and home grown food is considered a trait of the past for most of our citizens!
OUR Food and Drug Administration SAYS:
“there is no absolute right to consume or feed children any particular kind of food [because] comprehensive federal regulation of the food supply has been in effect at least since Congress enacted the Pure Food and Drugs Act of 1906
“fundamental privacy interest in obtaining ‘foods of their own choice’ for themselves and their families is without merit.”
Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund argues 2010 policy deprives consumers and a food buying group owner “of their fundamental and inalienable rights of (a) traveling across State lines with raw dairy products legally obtained and possessed; (b) providing for the care and well being of themselves and their families, including their children; and (c) producing, obtaining and consuming the foods of choice for themselves and their families, including their children.”
We enforce paperwork and permits to grow a garden IF we sell/barter the extra produce. (BILL s.510).
Suppliers used to provide restaurants with meat that was slaughtered and ground a few hours earlier, the same day. Instead, they must now submit a sample of their meat to a lab where, in a few days, they’ll be advised if it’s safe to sell. Large industrial operations, which use meat glue to blend meat from different countries, send a sample from a million pounds of meat, giving them a huge competitive advantage over small producers who don’t glue their meat together. The meat they sell to restaurants and grocers, Callicrate advised, is two weeks old.
Wisconsin Dept. of Ag held seminars the beginning of April to educate produce growers and packers as to what will be involved in inspections.  The supporters of locally grown have been co-opted by the new slogan ‘Buy local-Buy safely’ – that unless the produce is inspected, it isn’t safe.
Bed and breakfast operations cannot as institutions use their own eggs because of salmonella concerns and must buy federally inspected eggs. Even though they can sell the eggs at the farmers markets, they can’t serve them to borders.
GOOGLE “raid on Maxam Nutraceutics” and “Rawesome Foods” for details on the latest enforcing actions.
Most recently, the FDA shut down Pennsylvania AMISH farmer Dan Algyer, though no one became ill from his natural milk.  Morningland Cheese and Estrella Family Creamery are but two more in a long line of victims of the corporate war on natural food, though their products sickened no one. And most of the nation knows of the armed raid on Rawesome Foods last year. (Also see David Gumpert’s book, The Raw Milk Revolution: Behind America’s Emerging Battle Over Food Rights.)
We are dependent on Public Utilities!
Most the world lives sustainably with renewable energy and home grown food but not the U.S.A. We suck up 25% of the world’s fossil fuel resources while draining farm chemicals into our Gulf and polluting our entire southern border with oil and natural gas spills.
We require automotive licensing and titling.
What is the purpose really? Used vehicles are not worth transfering titles. We are talking about an asset worth less then 1% of our net worth. It is not a home worth hundreds of thousands of dollars! We can pay road tax by a simple registration process matched with VIN #s. When was the last time your car was stolen and you had to have it pulled over on the road by identifying it with a license plate number? We pay insurance because a vehicle is a dangerous and causes death and bodily harm often in accidental form. That is why the concept of insurance was created.
We promote selective insurance!
So, you just bought a cheap electronic. Our current cultural society will recommend and strongly influence you to get insurance on it and that the seller must get liability insurance in case you slip on your way out. Then you will be solicited to get more insurance in case someone tries to steal your items. By the time you total up all the insurance you could just have replaced the items multiple times! INSURANCE IS OUT OF CONTROL IN THE U.S.A.
We try to require HEALTH insurance!
You can not seriously believe that is justified. IT IS PURE ANAL RETENTIVE! Health insurance was a ploy by Keiser Calimentae with President Nixon to increase the gap between the rich and the poor. It was a way to avoid a govermentally supported health care system and to help control population growth by denying millions of sick the care they needed to live.
Internal Revenue System enforces unlawful “rules” on income tax.
Constitution supports that income taxation is a moral obligation to be decided by the people to support the government but t can not be DEMANDED! There is no INCOME TAX LAW for citizens! The 16th Amendment was ruled as a CORPORATION TAX Amendment, yet people in poverty have been held against their will and robbed by the regulation agency. READ my blog titled “The Story of Income Tax“.
In the begining, Congress (the true Law and Real Branch of Government) tried to stop the IRS but the power and reach of the agnecy had gotten out of control. The IRS grew too large to stop and future politicians would be too scared of the chaos that would arise if the rules were amended. I do not think a formal presidential statement, informing the United States citizens that “IRS income tax enforcement is hereby ended” would cause chaos. Large corporations would continue the recommended rules as their obligation to improve the economy and a status symbol amongst peers would influence most to do the same. The main difference would be that true patriots following the Constitution, would not be in jail and people like me, would not have had my life and banks accounts stolen from me!
WE ARE CENSORED and INVADED and OUR RIGHTS are INFRINGED!
Just a couple examples of Censorship
– In 2004, North Carolina ISP Madison River blocked their DSL customers from using any rival web-based phone service (like Vonage, Skype, etc.).
– In 2005, Canada’s telephone giant Telus blocked customers from visiting a website sympathetic to the Telecommunications Workers Union during a labor dispute.
– In 2007, Rob Topolski created data Packet tracking on Comcasts network and found them controlling his bandwidth based on KEY WORD algorithyms. (measurementlab.net / http://funchords.livejournal.com )
– In 2010, Time Warner’s AOL blocked all emails that mentioned www.dearaol.com – and advocacy campaign opposing the company’s pay-to-send email plan.
POLITICAL NOTES: (more coming soon!)
In the year 2000, [John Ashcroft] was running for re-election as Senator from Missouri against a man who died the month before the election. The voters preferred the late Gov. Mel Carnahan.
