The Color Purple…

is not what you want to see in your water.

Our friends at the Center for Rural Affairs recently reported in their newsletter about a livestock confinement (the A.J. Bos mega-dairy’s silage leachate pond, to be precise) west of Nora, Illinois, releasing a bright purple discharge into the Apple River, starting on October 1.

Locals report that Bos workers “spent the entire weekend pumping purple liquid from two hastily built retention ponds and spreading it onto neighboring fields” but “were not successful in preventing the discharge.”

Nobody has any explanation as to what might turn water this particular shade of the rainbow, but the satellite view of the CAFO from Google Earth shows the scale of the operation.
